Vasilyeva Leads Orange Against No. 69 DePaul

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Junior Maria Vasilyeva tallied her seventh singles win of the season in Syracuse’s 6-1 loss against No. 69 DePaul on Saturday on the campus of Marquette. The Blue Demons hand the Orange its first BIG EAST loss of the season, sweeping the doubles tally before winning five of six singles matches.

Vasilyeva collected a commanding 6-2, 6-1 win against DePaul’s Beatrix Csordas in her debut at the No. 4 position.

Second-year head coach Luke Jensen shuffled the back-end of the singles lineup, moving sophomore Ashley Spicer to No. 3 and sophomore Chelsea Jones to No. 5. Spicer’s four-match win streak came to an end following a 6-4, 6-2 loss against Selma Salkovic. Jones endured a 6-4, 6-2 setback against Katarina Milinkovic.

Freshman team captain Christina Tan and classmate Jacquelynn Tang also saw their four-match win streaks end against the Blue Demons. Tan suffered a 6-0, 7-5 loss at No. 1 against Dunja Antunovic. Kirsten Gambrell bested Tang, 7-5, 6-0, at the No. 6 position.

Gergana Ganeva tallied a 6-1, 6-0 win against SU freshman Simone Kalhorn at the No. 2 position.

In doubles action, Csordas and Ganeva collected an 8-5 win against Spicer and Kalhorn at the No. 1 position. Vasilyeva and Tang suffered an 8-6 defeat against Antunovic and Gambrell at No. 2, while Jones and Tan endured an 8-3 setback at No. 3 against Salkovic and Anja Mihaldinec.

Syracuse (6-5, 4-1) remains in Milwaukee and will meet BIG EAST foe Marquette on Sunday, February 24 at 10:00 a.m. (ET).
