The past weekend was a busy one for the Orange with women's lacrosse, softball, tennis, swimming and diving and track and field all in action. The women's lacrosse opened its 2008 campaign with a pair of wins, while the softball team headed south to compete in the Pirate Classic hosted by East Carolina. Tennis was on the road in Milwaukee to take on DePaul and Marquette and both the swimming and diving and track and field teams competed in the respective BIG EAST Championships.
The No. 5/5 Orange began its 2008 campaign with victories against Canisius, 24-2, on Wednesday, Feb. 20 and against No. 17/14 Dartmouth, 18-5, on Sunday, Feb. 24. The win against Canisius set SU single-game records for most goals scored and the largest margin of victory. The win was the first for Syracuse under the guidance of first-year head coach Gary Gait.
Junior attacker Katie Rowan leads the team with 14 points, including eight goals and six assists, while sophomore midfielder Christina Dove is second with 10 points, including eight goals and two assists. Freshman goalkeeper Liz Hogan tallied her first two career victories by posting a 2.15 goals-against average and a .733 save percentage.

Syracuse was handed four losses at the Pirate Classic hosted by East Carolina from Saturday, Feb. 23 through Sunday, Feb. 24. The Orange lost its first game, 7-2, to Appalachian State, but rebounded with a strong showing against ECU, taking the Pirates to eight innings, but eventually losing, 4-3. On Sunday, SU lost to Purdue, 6-2, and to Penn State, 8-0, in five innings.
The Orange was led by senior Rachel Tilford, who amassed four hits, including her 15th-career double, and drove in a team-best four RBI. She singled up the middle in the sixth inning against ECU to score two runs and tie the score, 3-3. The next day against Purdue, she singled in the first to again score two runs as the Orange jumped out to an early 2-0 lead. Classmate Chanel Roehner also helped the Orange's cause by going 4-for-12 with a double and three runs scored.

The men and women's team competed at the BIG EAST Championship from Wednesday Feb. 20 through Saturday, Feb. 23. The men finished seventh and the women placed eighth. Freshman Natalie Mazzetta had NCAA "B" qualifying times in the 200 Butterfly and the 500 Freestyle. She swam the 200 Butterfly in 2:01.91, placing her third in the competition. Early during the week she swam the 500 Freestyle in a school-record 4:50.17.
Freshman Katlin O'Hara set a SU record in the 50 Freestyle during the preliminary session with a time of 23.66. The 800 Freestyle relay team of Mazzetta, sophomore Katelyn Schumacher, sophomore Carolyn Delkus and junior Sarah Manning set a SU standard with a time of 7:29.20.

Tennis
The Orange competed against No. 69 DePaul on Saturday, Feb. 23 on the campus of Marquette before taking on the Golden Eagles on Sunday, Feb. 24. Both matches resulted in losses for the Orange, 6-1 and 5-2.

Junior Maria Vasilyeva tallied her seventh singles win of the season with a 6-2, 6-1 win against DePaul’s Beatrix Csordas in her debut at the No. 4 position. Vasilyeva followed with a convincing 6-0, 6-1 win against Marquette's Robin Metzler. Sophomore Chelsea Jones tallied a singles victory after battling back from a first-set loss to earn a 6-7, 6-1, 10-7 win against Shannon Brown.

The men and women's indoor track and field teams competed at the BIG EAST Championships in New York City from Saturday, Feb. 23 through Sunday, Feb. 24. After the two day event both teams finished ninth. Senior Jillian Drouin was named the Women's Outstanding Field Performer of the Year behind an NCAA-qualifying and record-setting performance in the pentathlon.
Drouin tallied a school-record and Armory Track Open and Collegiate standard 4,099 points en route to the multi-event crown on day one. She finished with the top time or mark in three of the five events. On Sunday, Drouin earned All-BIG EAST honors with a second-place finish and mark of 1.80m in the high jump.
