As a Presidential Scholar in high school who graduated in the top two percent in her class and is now part of SU’s honor program, freshman Katlyn Haycock’s academic determination is impressive, to say the least. What’s more impressive is her determination to take her tennis game to the professional level.
As a Presidential Scholar in high school who graduated in the top two percent in her class and is now part of SU’s honor program, freshman Katlyn Haycock’s academic determination is impressive, to say the least. What’s more impressive is her determination to take her tennis game to the professional level.
While Haycock has yet to record a decision in her young collegiate tennis career, neither her focus nor her drive has wavered. Since her childhood, Haycock’s parents have instilled a mentality to always give 110 percent. So far this season, no matter the circumstances, Haycock has found motivation to continue her progress toward becoming a pro.
“I watch the pros, and that’s where I want to be,” Haycock said. “Seeing improvements that I make and moving forward, not being in the starting lineup right now, that’s motivation.”
Head coach Luke Jensen knows that Haycock’s patience is essential to her growth and success as a player. Both Haycock and Jensen agree that SU’s tennis program is about creating professional players, and that although there may be bumps in the road, sooner or later, winning games will become a byproduct of the players’ growth and development. Haycock’s progression as a player so far will surely translate to wins once she breaks into the starting lineup.
“My game has come so far from where it was, even three months ago,” Haycock said. “Lately, there have been some big advancements. It’s amazing.”
The amount of energy that Haycock has put into this season is evident, especially to her teammates and coaches. Haycock’s hustle, both on the court and off it, has earned her the nickname “Flash.”
“You won’t find someone that works harder at what they’re trying to do,” Jensen said. “And she is so appreciative of the opportunity to be part of the Syracuse family.”
It’s clear that the Syracuse team reciprocates Haycock’s appreciation. In a recent match against Bucknell, all six of Haycock’s teammates watched from the sidelines, cheering on their hard-working teammate in an exhibition match. And while Haycock’s long-term goal is to reach the next level, she has found that the chemistry and camaraderie between her and her teammates has been one of the main highlights from her first year with the Orange.
“It was awesome to have everyone on the sidelines to support me in that match,” Haycock said. “I know my team and my coaches are behind me 100 percent.”
