SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Senior Ally Doodeman and freshman Natalie Mastracci have been invited to participate in the Canadian National Team Under 23 camp this weekend in London, Ontario. This is the beginning of the selection process for the 2008 FISA World Rowing U-23 Championships in Brandenburg, Germany which will be held July 16-20 this summer. The World Rowing U-23 Championships are a showcase of hundreds of up-and-coming athletes selected from approximately 40 countries. Those selected to the final team will then prepare for the 2008Winter Olympic Games in Beijing, China.
Last season, Dooderman was one of the team’s tri-captains and rowed in the 8-seat in the varsity eight boat through the BIG EAST Championship where they landed a third-place finish. She also helped the team regain the Kittell Cup by defeating Boston University.
“Ally has shown remarkable improvements over the course of this year,” said head coach Kris Sanford. “We have always known what a fierce competitor she is and she now has the erg numbers to earn her recognition as a potential elite athlete.”
Natalie just returned from a trip to British Columbia to participate in the Canadian U-19 Row Ontario Identification/Training Camp at Shawnigan Lake where she was one of only eight athletes chosen from Ontario. The event is designed to identify athletes for the 2009 Canada Games, which are held every four years, and is a development step for many of Canada's High Performance athletes.
“Natalie has shown great raw potential since coming to Syracuse,” Sanford said. “Her success at ID camps and on the erg have earned her recognition as a developing national athlete. The achievements that Natalie has seen in her short time rowing speak loudly for the successes she hopes to reach throughout her rowing career.”
The Syracuse women’s rowing team kicks off its spring season March 29 against Boston University at home.
