The Orange is riding the momentum established in a frantic come-from-behind revenge victory against Georgetown on Tuesday, February 26. Freshman guard Erica Morrow’s 3-point field goal with 18.4 ticks remaining proved to the game’s deciding basket in a 68-67 victory. The rookie sharpshooter found an open space and launched the go-ahead triple as the Carrier Dome faithful watched the ball kick straight-up off the back iron, pause and splash through the twine.
Morrow led all scorers with 22 points on 6-for-11 (.545) shooting overall, including a 4-for-6 (.667) display from long range. Sophomore forward Nicole Michael sparked the Orange’s late rally and posted 12 points and nine boards. Senior forward Fantasia Goodwin totaled 14 points and seven rebounds in 26 minutes as a reserve. Syracuse overcame a 12-point deficit in the final 11 minutes en route to the win.
The Orange’s 21-6 overall record to-date is the program’s best after 27 games since the 22-6 mark in 1980-81. Syracuse’s triumph against the Hoyas guarantees an above .500 finish in the BIG EAST for the first time since the 2000-01 campaign, and only the sixth in program history. The Orange, tallying a 7-3 away record this season, is in search of its first eight-win road campaign all-time.
Syracuse’s 12-game turnaround from the 2006-07 campaign is the second-largest in women’s college basketball this season. Winthrop, from the Big South Conference, has tallied a 19-9 record thus far, boasting a 13-game improvement from one year ago.
Junior forward Chandrea Jones leads four double figure performers for Syracuse with a 15.3 points per game average while grabbing 7.8 rebounds. Goodwin has collected 12.9 points an outing and leads the charge on the window with 8.9 boards. Morrow (12.9) and Michael (12.7) compliment SU’s high-powered offense, ranked six in the BIG EAST and 35 nationally.
The nationally ranked Scarlet Knights provided 11th-year head coach C. Vivian Stringer with her 800th-career coaching win following a 60-46 victory against DePaul on February 27. Stringer, in 37th season overall, joins Tennessee bench general Pat Summitt and former Texas sideline mentor Jody Conradt as the only women’s basketball coaches to accomplish the feat.
Epiphany Prince has powered the Rutgers’ offense with a team-high 14.4 points per game. Mateet Ajavon and Essence Carson have totaled 12.3 and 10.1 points an outing, respectively. Kia Vaughn leads the Scarlet Knights on the glass, averaging 8.6 boards per contest. Rutgers has won six of its last seven games, including a 73-71 victory against then-No.1 Connecticut.
