Spicer Leads Orange Tennis at Missouri

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Sophomore Ashley Spicer captured her third singles victory in as many matches and improved her record to 3-1 this season against Missouri’s Maureen Modesto on Sunday at the Green Tennis Center. The Tigers collected five of six singles matches en route to a 6-1 triumph against the Orange.

Spicer earned her third win of the season at the No. 4 position, starting the match with a decisive 6-2 victory in the first set. Modesto challenged the Syracuse sophomore in the second set, taking Spicer to a tie-breaker after a 6-6 deadlock. The Round Rock, Texas native battled to a 7-5 triumph in the extra session.

Sophomore Chelsea Jones suffered her first loss in singles action this season at No. 6 with a 6-4, 6-1 defeat against Kaitlyn Ritchie. Freshman Christina Tan (0-6, 2-6), freshman Simone Kalhorn (2-6, 0-6), junior Maria Vasilyeva (2-6, 1-6) and freshman Jacquelynn Tang (2-6, 3-6) endured losses at No, 1, 2, 3 and 5, respectively.

In doubles action, Spicer and Tang battled to an 8-6 loss at No. 3 against Ritchie and Modesto. The team of Chrissy Svetlic and Mallory Weber handed Tan and Kalhorn an 8-3 loss at No. 1, while Vasilyeva and Jones suffered a setback at No. 2 against Kaitlin Dunham and Sofia Ayala, 8-1.

The Orange continues a four-match road-swing on Friday, February 8 against in-state rival Niagara at 6:00 p.m.
