NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – The Syracuse tennis team snapped a brief two-match skid with an emphatic 7-0 sweep against non-conference and in-state foe Niagara on Friday night. Sophomores Ashley Spicer and Chelsea Jones improve their singles marks to 4-1 overall, while Jones and partner junior Maria Vasilyeva move to 4-1 in doubles play.

Spicer playing at the No. 4 position collected a 6-4, 6-2 victory, while Jones tallied a 6-2, 6-1 triumph at No. 6. Vasilyeva improves her record to 3-2 this season with a 6-3, 6-0 win.

The first-year trio of Christina Tan, Simone Kalhorn and Jacquelynn Tang pushed their singles’ records to 3-2 overall. Tan, playing at the No. 1 position and serving as team’s captain, recorded a commanding 6-0, 6-2 win. Kalhorn posted a 6-0, 6-4 triumph at No. 2 and Tang registered a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 5.

In doubles action, Tan and Kalhorn snapped a three-match losing streak with an 8-6 victory at the No. 1 spot. Jones and Vasilyeva continued their early-season winning ways with an 8-4 win at the No 2 position, while Spicer and Tang improved to 3-2 this season with a convincing 8-1 win at No. 3.

The Orange’s clean sweep of the Purple Eagles marks the team’s first win away from the Drumlins Tennis Center this season.

Syracuse (3-2, 2-0) remains in action on Saturday, February 9 at 12:00 p.m. on the road at in-state rival Buffalo.
