The College of Charleston Classic is the back stretch of SU's spring break trip, which began with the USF Invitational from Mar. 7 and ended on Mar. 9. The Orange came away with three victories with wins against Sam Houston State (3-2), Fairfield (6-3) and Quinnipiac (10-0 (5)). Junior catcher Amy Kelley led the way with seven hits and a .667 slugging percentage.
Senior Chanel Roehner pitched a complete game against Sam Houston and earned the third win of the weekend by pitching a complete-game shutout against Quinnipiac. Roehner also made her mark at the plate by batting .389 (7-for-18) with three runs and a team-best six RBI.
During the first four games of the weekend, the Orange posted nine hits each outing, resulting in three wins. Six student-athletes batted above .300 and three batted above .400: freshman Rachel Helman (.571), Kelley (.467) and sophomore Ev Anderson (.429).
SU entered the weekend with a team batting average of .174 and left it with an average of .213.
SU held a 4.29 ERA average entering the USF Invitation, but after a shutout and three games with three-or-less runs allowed, the team’s mark stands at 3.76. Roehner posted a 1.17 ERA in two wins, while sophomore Brittany Gardner registered a 1.66 mark in two appearances, including her first win. Roehner leads the team with a 2.33 ERA and has only allowed 13 earned runs in 39.0 innings.
The Bearcats (2-7) are on a four-game skid and are coming off a 10-9 loss to Cal-Riverside at the UTEP Tournament from Feb. 29 - Mar. 2. Binghamton’s only win at the tournament came in a six-inning, 12-4 victory against Georgetown during the first day. Sara Eppolito leads the team with a .345 average (10-of-29) and a .406 onbase percentage. Cyrilla Suker holds a 1-3 record and a team-leading 2.50 ERA, throwing 33.1 innings.
The Cougars (9-19), who are coming off a 5-0 loss to Stanford, are on a six-game losing streak, but held a season-long, seven-game winning streak just prior to the skid. Tiffany Harmon is the only Cougar batting above .300 with a .304 mark and has amassed a team-best three doubles and three triples. Terri Mesko has pitched a team-high 89.0 innings, posting a 3-9 mark and a 6.17 ERA.
The Red Storm (5-13) is looking for its first winning streak after winning two straight with wins against Cal State Northridge (5-0) and St. Peter’s (13-2). Brandy Reyes leads the Storm with a .354 average (17-for-48) and has accumulated five RBI and two doubles. Kat Lawrence leads all St. John’s hurlers with a 3-5 record and 53 strike outs, but is third with a 5.22 ERA. Chelsea Pimpton’s 4.04 ERA leads the team.
The Orange is no stranger to Binghamton and St. John’s, but has never faced Charleston. Against Binghamton, SU owns a 9-1 record and has won six consecutive. Last season, the Orange claimed a 12-0 and a 4-0 victory. Syracuse holds a slight 7-6 advantage against St. John’s in a series that dates back to 2001. The two teams split two extra inning games last season: 3-2 (8) SU, and, 12-11 (10) STJ.
