
Tennis Resumes Schedule in Sunshine State

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Syracuse tennis team (6-8) resumes action on Friday, March 14 against
Central Florida and on Sunday, March 16 against BIG EAST foe No. 44 South Florida. The Orange will look to snap a four-match slide during its Spring Break tour in the Sunshine State.
Syracuse concludes a season-long seven-match road trip against the Knights and Bulls. The Orange opened the stretch with a commanding 6-1 win against BIG EAST foe Connecticut and improved its conference record to a perfect 4-0. Syracuse’s 6-1 loss against No. 69 DePaul on February 23 was its first against a BIG EAST opponent.
Orange Rewind
Syracuse suffered a narrow 4-3 setback at Ivy League foe Yale on March 1. Junior Maria Vasilyeva, sophomore Chelsea Jones and freshman Jacquelynn Tang keyed the Orange in singles competition.
Vasilyeva totaled her fifth-straight victory with a 6-2, 6-4 decision against the Bulldogs’ Lilian Nguyen at the No. 4 position. Jones tallied her second come-from-behind win in as many matches with a 2-6, 7-5, 10-3 triumph against Lindsey Dashiell at the No. 5 position. Tang claimed a 4-6, 6-4, 10-8 victory against Yale’s Silia DeFilippis at No. 6.
Vasilyeva and Tang earned a convincing 8-0 victory at the No. 3 position against DeFilippis and Nguyen.
Tang provided Syracuse its lone point in a 6-1 setback at Ivy League opponent Brown on March 2. The Las Vegas, Nev., native posted a 6-4, 6-3 win at the No. 6 position against the Bears’ Alexa Baggio. With the victory, Tang matched Vasilyeva’s team-best nine singles wins.
Central Florida (6-6)
After opening the season 2-4, Central Florida has tallied four wins in its last six outings and boasts a 6-6 overall mark. It their most recent contest, the Knights suffered a 5-2 loss at Rice on March 11. Jenny Frisell and Anna Yakimchenkova lead the Central Florida singles lineup with 7-5 overall records, including three straight victories and triumphs in five of their last six decisions. The doubles pairing of Elvira Serrot and Jennifer Carati have tallied five-straight wins and seven in her last eight meetings.
South Florida (11-5)
No. 44 South Florida opened the 2008 season with six-straight wins, including five consecutive sweeps. The Bulls, with an 11-5 overall mark and 3-2 BIG EAST record, are currently riding a
four-match win streak, including three-straight against conference foes Villanova, Seton Hall and St. John’s. Janette Bejlkova, ranked as the 49th singles player in the country, owns a 9-2 overall mark and a flawless 8-0 record at the No. 1 position. Iciri Rai leads the Bulls with a team-high 12 singles victories. Bejlkova and Rai own a club-best 4-1 record in doubles action. USF meets Buffalo (3/13) and Dartmouth (3/15) before the Orange.
What’s Ahead
Syracuse returns to the friendly confines of the Drumlins Tennis Center on Sunday, March 23 against BIG EAST foe Pittsburgh at 11:00 a.m. The Orange owns a flawless 4-0 mark at home this season.
