
Leveille Sparks Late Surge, No. 5/5 Syracuse On Doorstep Against No. 4/4 Johns Hopkins at the Break

BALTIMORE, Md. – Seniors attack man Mike Leveille and midfielder Steven Brooks have tallied two goals apiece as No. 5/5 Syracuse has overcome a four-goal deficit and trails 6-5 against No. 4/4 Johns Hopkins at halftime on Saturday at Homewood Field. The contest boasts two of college lacrosse’s most storied programs, featuring a combined 18 national championships and 110 NCAA Tournament wins.
The Bluejays opened the scoring just 58 ticks into regulation after Steven Boyle found the back of the net in front. The Orange answered with Brooks’ sixth tally of the season off a feed from Leveille. With the helper, Leveille extends his points streak to 44 games, ranked second in the country.
Johns Hopkins regained the lead with Michael Kimmel’s score at the 9:22 mark. Two minutes following, Brooks deposited his second of the game and evened the scoring with 7:20 remaining in the first stanza. Senior midfielder Brendan Loftus, the Orange’s hero last week against Georgetown in overtime, was credited with the assist.
Austin Walker’s tally at the 13:46 mark of the second quarter sparked a 4-0 run for the hosts. Paul Rabil capped the spurt with a goal with just under four minutes left before the intermission.
Leveille ignited a three-goal run heading into the locker room and ended the Orange’s 20-minute scoreless streak with his 10th score of the season with 2:44 left on the clock. Leveille struck 64 seconds later before junior attack man Greg Niewieroski tickled the twine with 41 seconds remaining.
Freshman goalkeeper John Galloway has totaled eight saves.
