SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Sophomore Christina Dove netted a career-high six goals and junior Katie Rowan (Delmar, N.Y.) moved into second place on the Orange’s all-time career points and goals scored lists to lead the No. 6/5 Syracuse women’s lacrosse team to a 22-5 victory against Towson in the Carrier Dome on Wednesday, March 19. The win extends Syracuse’s winning streak to four games and improves its record to 6-1, while Towson goes to 5-2 overall.
"The team showed up ready to play,” said head coach Gary Gait. "They came out, gave 100 percent and they were mentally focused and prepared. I just challenged them to demonstrate how good they really are when they can pull it altogether and they did."
The Orange kept its streak of scoring the first goal of the game alive when Dove scored on a free position at the 26:57 mark of the first half. That goal sparked Syracuse on an 11-0 scoring run during the first 8:55 of the game. Dove scored four goals during the run, while Rowan and Halley Quillinan added two each. Towson scored its first goal of the game with 8:33 remaining when Hillary Fratzke scored on an assist from Lauren McAfee. Each team added another goal as the Orange held a 12-2 halftime advantage.
The second half started the same way as the first as the Orange scored nine straight goals to take its largest lead of the day at 21-2 with 8:10 remaining. Quillinan, Rowan, Breanna Stiff and Megan Mosenson each scored two goals during the offensive outburst. The Tigers scored three goals in the final 5:37 of the game as the Orange recorded a 22-5 victory.
Dove led the Syracuse with six goals. It marks the fourth time this season a member of the Orange has recorded six goals in a game. Rowan finished four goals and two assists. With the six points, Rowan has climbed to second place on Syracuse’s all-time scoring list with 187 points. She also moved into second place on the career goals scored list with 131.
Syracuse featured a balanced attack as seven different players scored. Quillinan finished with four goals, and Mosenson had three goals and two assists. In addition, Awehiyo Thomas (Six Nations, Ontario) and Stiff each recorded a pair of goals, while Kristin Brady (Binghamton, N.Y.) had a goal and an assist. Britt Woodfield led Towson with three goals.
On the defensive end, freshman goalkeeper Liz Hogan recorded six saves, while senior Christina Gibson had three caused turnovers and four ground balls.
The Orange outshot Towson, 41-19, and won 21-of-29 draw controls. Syracuse picked up 12 ground balls to 11 for the Tigers.
Syracuse returns to BIG EAST play on Saturday when it hosts Connecticut in the Carrier Dome at Noon. The game is part of a doubleheader with the Orange men’s lacrosse squad, which takes on Binghamton at 3:30 p.m.
