NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Syracuse women’s tennis team suffered its third loss in as many matches following a narrow 4-3 loss at the hands of Ivy League foe Yale on Saturday. Junior Maria Vasilyeva, sophomore Chelsea Jones and freshman Jacquelynn Tang keyed the Orange in singles competition.
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Syracuse women’s tennis team suffered its third loss in as many matches following a narrow 4-3 loss at the hands of Ivy League foe Yale on Saturday. Junior Maria Vasilyeva, sophomore Chelsea Jones and freshman Jacquelynn Tang keyed the Orange in singles competition.
Vasilyeva tallied her fifth-straight singles win and is now 7-3 in her last 10 matches following a 6-2, 6-4 win against Yale’s Lilian Nguyen. Since the Orange’s lineup change against DePaul on February 23, Vasilyeva is a perfect 3-0 at the No. 4 position and leads SU with nine wins in singles play.
Jones has collected two come-from-behind wins in as many matches with a 2-6, 7-5, 10-3 victory against the Bulldogs’ Lindsey Dashiell at the No. 5 spot. Jones rebounded from a first-set loss against Marquette’s Shannon Brown on February 24, earning a 6-7, 6-1, 10-7 victory.
Tang claimed her first victory at the No. 6 position, besting Yale’s Silia DeFilippis in rallying fashion, 4-6, 6-4, 10-8.
The Bulldogs collected singles wins at the top three positions after capturing two victories in doubles play.
Tang and Vasilyeva, shifted to the No. 3 position, earned a commanding 8-0 win against DeFilippis and Nguyen. The duo evened its mark at 3-3 on the season.
Sophomore Ashley Spicer and freshman Simone Kalhorn, playing at No. 1, and Jones and Christina Tan, making their debut at No. 2, battled to identical 8-5 losses.
