SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The 2007-08 indoor track & field season concluded Saturday, March 15 at the Division I Indoor NCAA Championship at the University of Arkansas’ Randal Tyson Track Center. Graduate Sheron Mark, senior Jillian Drouin and senior Ramon Sosa donned the Orange in the national finale.
The Syracuse indoor campaign was highlighted by seven school-record performances, including Drouin’s top mark in the pentathlon at the BIG EAST Championship, and 51 first-place performances.
“We had some great performances during the indoor season with Jillian Drouin, Ramon Sosa and Kyle Heath,” said third-year Syracuse head coach Chris Fox. “Maegan Krifchin’s performance at the ECAC Championship was spectacular and Jeff Scull ended his season on a high note at Washington. We look forward to using the indoor season as a stepping-stone towards a successful outdoor campaign.”
School-Record Performances
Drouin’s first-place finish in the pentathlon at the BIG EAST Championship eclipsed the Orange school record in the event and set a new Armory Track (New York, N.Y.) Open standard. She tallied a program-best and an NCAA-qualifying total of 4,099 points, surpassing her previous mark of 3,627 points.
Sosa earned all-conference honors after a school-record and second-place performance of 7.78 seconds in the 60m dash at the BIG EAST Championship. He eclipsed Adrian Woodley’s time of 7.81 seconds, established in 1999.
“Ramon came to Syracuse as a walk-on his freshman season,” said assistant coach Dave Hegland. “Adrian Woodley was a phenomenal athlete as a multi-year All-American and an Olympian for Canada. To be a mentioned in the same breath with him, it’s an outstanding accomplishment for Ramon.”
Mark qualified for the NCAA Championship with an all-conference and third-place tally of 13.04m in the triple jump at the BIG EAST Championship. She surpassed her previous mark of 12.94m, collected in 2005.
Sophomore Maegan Krifchin totaled a school-record time of 2:50.54 and finished fourth in the 1,000m run at the ECAC Championship. In addition to bettering her qualifying time by more than three seconds in the finals, Krifchin toppled Kathleen Sanborn’s 2006 performance of 2:52.55.
Senior Kyle Heath matched Bruce Fisher’s school record in the one-mile run, established in 1972, with a time of 4:04.30 at the Giegengack Invitational. However, in the same meet, teammate Jordan Davis finished second with a school-record time of 4:02.79. Heath did Davis one better at the University of Washington Last Chance Meet, finishing with a program-best time of 4:01.68.
Sophomore Jon Buice bettered Craig Stivala’s school-record mark, set in 2004, with a total of 4,971 points and a seventh-place finish at the BIG EAST Championship. Two weeks following, Buice improved his mark with a total of 5,068 points and seventh-place finish at the IC4A Championship.
"Jon really just started competing in all heptathlon events," said assistant coach Enoch Borozinski. "He's already broke the school-record total twice and had a solid performance at the IC4A Championship. The experience he's gained in the last year bodes well for the next few years."
Freshman Flings Owusu-Agyapong tallied a school-record performance of 7.52 seconds in the 60m dash semifinal heat at the ECAC Championship. Owusu-Agyapong surpassed Alison Culley’s time of 7.53 seconds, established in 2003.
