SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse tennis team (7-11, 5-4) snapped a seven-match losing skid in resounding fashion, sweeping BIG EAST Villanova (3-6, 1-3), 7-0, on Tuesday afternoon at the Drumlins Tennis Center. With the win, the Orange improves its mark to 5-1 at home in 2008.
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse tennis team (7-11, 5-4) snapped a seven-match losing skid in resounding fashion, sweeping BIG EAST Villanova (3-6, 1-3), 7-0, on Tuesday afternoon at the Drumlins Tennis Center. With the win, the Orange improves its mark to 5-1 at home in 2008.
Syracuse began the match with a three-match sweep in doubles action. Freshmen Simone Kalhorn and Jacquelynn Tang claimed their first win of the season with an 8-2 victory at the No. 1 spot against Jaclyn Williamson and Ashley Reed.
Sophomores Chelsea Jones and Ashley Spicer collected their second win in as many tries with an 8-4 triumph at the No. 2 spot against Dani Phillis and Courtney Reed. Junior Maria Vasilyeva and Christina Tan finished the sweep with a 9-7 win at No. 3 versus Carla Erskine and Emily Urda.
The Orange tallied its first doubles point since February 17 in a 6-1 win against BIG EAST rival Connecticut.
Tan and Kalhorn kept the SU momentum rolling at the No. 1 and 2 positions, respectively. Tan ended a seven-match slide with a 6-1, 6-2 win against Erskine. Kalhorn snapped an eight-match drought with a come-from-behind 3-6, 6-3, 10-4 victory versus Urda.
Vasilyeva totaled her fourth-straight win and team-best 13th of the season with a 6-1, 6-2 triumph at the No. 3 spot against Courtney Reed. Spicer tallied her second-straight victory, claiming a convincing 6-0, 6-0 decision at No. 4 against Phillis.
Jones rebounded from a marathon, three-hour loss on Sunday against Pittsburgh with a 6-3, 6-3 win at the No. 5 hole against Williamson. Tang earned her 11th singles win of the season, besting Ashley Reed at No. 6, 6-0, 6-3.
The victory is Syracuse’s fifth against a BIG EAST opponent this season, eclipsing last year’s win total versus conference foes.
The Orange will play its third match in four days on Wednesday at the Drumlins Tennis Center against in-state foe Colgate at 4:00 p.m.
