SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The No. 5/6 Syracuse women’s lacrosse squad broke open a tight game, scoring the first nine goals of the second half on its way to a commanding 21-10 win against Hofstra in front of 476 fans in the Carrier Dome on Sunday, March 9. Junior Katie Rowan led the Orange with nine points on five goals and four assists. Sophomore Halley Quillinan had a team-high six goals, while Christina Dove had five goals
Senior Kristin Brady gave the Orange an early lead, scoring an unassisted goal 53 seconds into game. Syracuse has now scored first in all five of its games this season. The two teams traded goals before Rowan scored twice to start Syracuse on a 5-1 scoring run that gave the Orange a 7-3 lead with 11:32 remaining in the half. The Pride’s K’Leigh Vanaman found the back of the net at the 11:01 mark to stop SU’s scoring run and start one for Hofstra. The Pride netted five of the game’s next seven goals to cut the Orange’s lead to one, 8-7, with 5:14 on the clock. Quillinan scored on an assist from Rowan at the 4:12 mark to extend SU’s lead to 9-7, before Hofstra responded on a goal by Lauren Whitcomb with 1:34 remaining. Quillinan scored the final goal of the half on a free position with one second left on the clock to give SU a 10-8 halftime advantage.
Syracuse dominated the second half, outscoring Hofstra, 11-2 in the period. Rowan scored just 46 seconds into the half, sparking the Orange on a 9-0 scoring run. Rowan had two goals and two assists during the spurt, while Dove added four goals as Syracuse built its lead to 19-8. Sylvia Queener scored an unassisted goal at the 9:52 mark for Hofstra’s first goal of the half. The teams traded goals before SU’s Awehiyo Thomas scored the final goal of the game at the 1:56 mark for the 21-10 final.
"We had a good first 10 minutes of the game," head coach Gary Gait said. "We were ready to play. Then we had a lapse in the middle of the first half and that was tough. In the first half we struggled defensively and had a lot of turnovers in our clears. That is uncharacteristic for us in our clears. We are usually a lot better than that. It was really just a lack of focus. We got together at halftime and talked about it and worked on what we needed to work on and came out and dominated the draw controls and that was a big difference."
Rowan’s nine points tie her season high and rank third on Syracuse’s single-game scoring list. Quillinan has scored six goals in each of the last two games and has moved into eighth place on the Orange’s career goals scored list with 69. Dove has also moved into the top 10 in career goals scored. Her five goals against Hofstra give her 65 in her career, which ties her for 10th place on the all-time list. Megan Mosenson (Malvern, Pa.) recorded her first hat trick of the season with three goals.
The Orange outshot Hofstra, 41-20, and picked up 17 ground balls to 10 for the Pride. Syracuse won the draw control battle, 17-14. Orange goalkeeper Liz Hogan (Victor, N.Y.) recorded five saves.
Syracuse will be back in action on Sunday, March 16 when it opens BIG EAST Conference play at Notre Dame at 1 p.m.
