BOSTON - The Syracuse women’s rowing team heads to New England this weekend to compete for the Orange Challenge Cup against Northeastern and Pennsylvania. The annual race between No. 20 Pennsylvania, Northeastern, and the Orange takes place on April 12 in Boston, Mass.
Last weekend the Orange women’s rowing team challenged No. 2 Yale and Cornell in Darby, Conn. placing second in the varsity four while the varsity eight, second varsity eight, novice eight and notice four all finished in third place.
Since 1979, the women’s rowing team has won five Orange Challenge Cups and is looking to end Northeastern’s two-year winning streak. Northeastern will be a tough competitor as the Huskies defeated Dartmouth, Rhode Island and Boston College this past weekend in their home opener. Pennsylvania will not go overlooked either as it finished second to then-No. 1 Yale in all races on March 29, sliding the Quakers into the USRowing/CRCA national coaches’ poll at No. 20.
Syracuse won its first Orange Challenge Cup in 1994 and then again in 2001. From 2003-05 the Orange reigned as three-peat champions and they are hoping to take over the title once again this year.
