SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse softball team added to its incoming class with Diandra Burns agreeing to join the team for next season, head coach Leigh Ross announced Monday. Burns, a first-team All-CIF selection, will be the sixth new member of the Orange for the 2009 season.
"DeeDee is a tremendous athlete and we are extremely excited that she will represent the blue and orange for the next four years," said associate head coach Kyle Jamieson. "She is a defensive gem, who can hit for both power and average, and is extremely quick. We are hoping she will be a spark plug for our offense."
A Chino, Calif. native, Burns comes to Syracuse with success at the travel and high school level. She is a member of Team Smith (Gold) travel team and is enjoying her final season at Chino High School. In addition to her All-CIF First Team nod, Burns was named Best Offensive Player and co-MVP for her high school, as well as an Academic Scholar.
"We are fortunate to get a player who has competed at the 'gold' summer ball level," Jamieson said. "We've enjoyed watching her patrol centerfield for Team Smith. Her experience playing at such a high level will allow her to come in and make an immediate impact."
Burns, who throws and bats right and carries a .365 batting average, will be joining the ROTC when she arrives in the Salt City.
