ITHACA, N.Y. – Junior second baseman Lindsay Wasek went 4-for-6 with a double and a home run to drive in four runs in the softball team's 5-3 and 5-4 losses to Cornell on Wednesday. Wasek began the day by going 3-for-3 with a RBI and a run scored in the first outing and followed with a 1-for-3, three RBI performance (career-high tying) during the night cap.
Junior catcher Amy Kelley, who leads the team with a .378 average, went 3-for-6 with two RBI and two runs scored, while freshman third baseman Hallie Gibbs and junior shortstop Jamie Kelling each produced two hits.
After senior pitcher Chanel Roehner whiffed two batters in the bottom of the first inning of game one, Wasek drove in the Orange's first run of the game in the top of the second when she doubled to right-center field to score senior center fielder Rachel Tilford from second. The double was Wasek's first of the season and eighth of her career.
Junior Jorden Rosen added to the lead an at-bat later when she singled to shallow left-center to score Wasek.
The Orange threatened in the top of the fourth when Tilford and Wasek hit back-to-back singles with one out, but a great defensive play by Big Red senior third baseman Adrienne Matta on a hard-hit ground ball junior first baseman Nicole Miller led to a inning-ending double play.
Carrying the momentum to the offensive side, Cornell sophomore first baseman Elise Menaker put her team on the board with a solo shot and added to it with a three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth. Menaker leads the Ivy League with 12 home runs.
The second long ball came an at-bat after Cornell pulled the score even with an RBI single by sophomore shortstop Alyson Intihar.
Kelley answered in the top of the sixth with a leadoff, solo home run. The homer was her conference-leading eighth of the season and she is now tied with Tilford for the sixth spot on SU's all-time career list with 14.
Cornell freshman pitcher Ali Tomlinson closed out her 11th victory of the season (11-4). Roehner pitched 5.0 innings, striking out three and is now 6-9. Freshman Angie Sagnelli pitched 1.0 innings in relief and struck out one.
Kelley produced her team-high tying 20th RBI of the season and second of the day when she drove in Kelling with a two-out single to center field during game two. Kelling led off the game with an infield single to second base.
The Big Red responded in the bottom half of the inning with an unearned run off the bat of senior center fielder Jenna Campagnolo, who singled to leftfield.
Wasek put the Orange ahead, 4-1, with a one-out, three-run home run during the top of the fourth innings. Freshman pinch runner Kate Mankowski and Kelley scored on the play. Mankowski was runner for freshman third baseman Hallie Gibbs, who led off the inning with a single. Kelley followed with her team-leading eighth double of the year.
Yet again the BIG RED responded; senior right fielder Ashley Wolf hit a two-run home run to center field in the fifth and Menaker doubled in the sixth to score a run and tie the game at 4-4.
Cornell sophomore second baseman Devon March scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth on a wild pitcher.
Sophomore pitcher Brittany Gardner totaled six strikeouts in 6.0 innings of work, her 11th complete game of the year. She is now 8-9. Big Red senior Jenn Meunier started the game and threw 4.1 innings before being replaced by sophomore Dana Robbins, who earned the win to go to 1-0.
The Orange welcomes St. John's to the SU Softball Stadium at SkyTop on Friday, April 18 for a 2 p.m. doubleheader. Seton Hall comes to Syracuse for a doubleheader on Sunday, April 20 at noon.
