Orange Shuts Down Albany in the Second Half, Wins 21-11

ALBANY, N.Y. – Senior Kristin Brady had a career-high five goals and seven points, while Katie Rowan recorded eight points to lead the No. 5 Syracuse women's lacrosse team to a 21-11 victory against Albany on Wednesday.
Syracuse (9-2) jumped out to an early lead. Rowan scored just 15 seconds into the contest, and Brady and Halley Quillinan found the back of the net to give the Orange a 3-0 lead. Jane Bush and Kayla Best scored Albany's (7-4) first two goals of the game to cut the lead to one. Rowan scored her second goal of the contest before the Great Danes scored three straight to take its first lead of the game, 5-4, with 20:07 remaining. SU tied the scored when Jackie DePetris scored on a fast break to tie the score, and Brady scored a goal in transition to give the Orange a 6-5 lead with 16:02 left on the clock. Megan Mosenson scored off an assist from Brady, and the two connected again when Mosenson found Brady in front of the net to give the Orange an 8-5 lead with 11:33 remaining. Albany responded with two straight goals to again bring the Great Danes to within one. Quillinan extended SU's lead when she found the back of the net off a pass from Mosenson, and Awehiyo Thomas scored with 23 seconds remaining in the half to give the Orange a 10-7 halftime lead.
The Great Danes scored three of the first four goals of the second half to bring Albany to cut SU's lead to 11-10 with 21:29 remaining. The Orange responded when Mosenson again scored on an assist from Brady, sparking Syracuse on a 8-0 scoring run over a span of 17 minutes to take control of the game. Tee Ladouceur scored with 1:32 to halt the scoring spree, before Brady and Quillinan scored in the final 1:19 for the 21-11 final.
"We just needed to relax and focus on playing better defense," head coach Gary Gait said. "We came around and in the second half we had confidence and we all worked together as a team."
Brady and Quillinan led the Orange offensive attack with five goals each, while Rowan had four goals to along with four assists. Mosenson scored two goals and dished out a career-best five assists for a career-high seven points. Best led Albany with four goals.
Syracuse had 31 shots on goal to 36 for the Great Danes. The Orange won the ground ball battle, picking up 17 to 14 for Albany. Each team won 17 draw controls in the contest. Freshman goalkeeper Liz Hogan (Victor, N.Y.) recorded a career-high 14 saves for Syracuse.
The Orange will be back in action on Saturday when it hosts No. 6 Georgetown in the Carrier Dome at noon. The game is part of a doubleheader with the Syracuse men's squad. Admission is $5 through halftime of the women's game.
