Syracuse head women's lacrosse coach Gary Gait is currently highlighted on ESPN The Magazine's website in its piece titled "The Jordan of ...Lacrosse". The feature profiles the players considered the greatest in their sport. Gait, who led the Orange men's lacrosse team to three-straight national championships from 1988-90, was a three-time first-team All-American. He was inducted into the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 2005.
Gait holds the NCAA and Syracuse career goals scored records (192) He also owns SU's single-season goals mark (70), and his nine tallies against Navy in the 1990 NCAA Tournament tied the tournament and school single-game standards. He earned All-America honors four times, including three first-team nods. Gait also won the Lt. Raymond Enners Award (National Player of the Year) twice (1988, 1990) and the Lt. Donald C. MacLaughlin Jr. Award (Midfielder of the Year) in 1988 and 1990. In conjunction with the 1997 Final Four, the NCAA Lacrosse Committee named Gait to the 25th Anniversary Team.
After his collegiate playing career, Gait played in the National Lacrosse League for 15 years, earning the MVP award a record six times, including five in a row (1995-99). He also played five outdoor seasons in Major League Lacrosse. In his final MLL campaign, Gait led the league in goals, points and hat tricks. He finished tied in the voting for league MVP.
Gait took over the helm of the Syracuse women's program in August 2007. He's guided the Orange to a 9-2 record this season and a No. 5 national ranking. Syracuse hosts No. 6 Georgetown on Saturday noon in the Carrier Dome.
