DERBY, Conn. – The Syracuse women’s rowing team competed in its second event of the spring today against No. 2 Yale and rv/rv Cornell in Derby, Conn. All five boats improved on their times from the previous week. The varsity four placed second while the varsity eight, second varsity eight, novice eight and novice four all finished third. Yale won the varsity eight, second varsity eight and varsity four races. Cornell won both novice races. Yale won three and Cornell won two the races. The three crews navigated the 2,000-meter track in flat water with a tail current and a slight building tailwind from one-three miles per hour as the races progressed.

“I think the second varsity eight did a really good job. They rowed better then they did last and week and we had to make changes due to injuries and they handled that very well. It’s disappointing to row a really good race and not be where you want to be,” head coach Kris Sanford said. “As usual the varsity eight had a great effort, but we are yet follow our race plan. They are a group of fierce competitors and today we rowed too high. We must start to race what we practice. I am certain that we can pick up that speed when we get confidence in our won rhyme and pace.”
The varsity four boat of Lydia Wong (coxswain), Ashley Tabor (stroke), Zaula Usman (three seat), Susan Groff (two seat) and Brittany Jock (bow) posted a time of 7:19.1, 33 seconds better than last week.
The varsity eight boat of Tina Campagna (coxswain), Ally Doodeman (stroke), Natalie Mastracci (seven seat), Lindsay Lentini (six seat), Jess Tacinelli (five seat), Kaitlin Grant (four seat), Liz Henwood (three seat), Sarah Stapp (two seat) and Ildiko Toth (bow) had a time of 6:19.01, more than a minute faster than last week’s pace.
The second varsity eight shell of Kate Todd (coxswain), Erica Mahon (stroke), Christine Turner (seven seat), Heidi Bulk (six seat), Rachael Ogundarin (five seat), Maura Helmer (four seat), Mandy DeHaven (three seat), Theresa Alessio (two seat) and Christine DePompeo (bow) finished in 6:38.07, more than a minute quicker than last weekend.
The novice eight of Mikela Almeida (coxswain), Jacque Lee (stroke), Julie Ruskin (seven seat), Allison Ehrke (six seat), Mary Ellen Anderson (five seat), Ali Sayer (four seat), Laura Murphy (three seat), Brandis Arcadia (two seat) and Melody Miller (bow) ended with a time of 6:51.1, more than 68 seconds better than last week.
The novice four of Catherine Wilcox (coxswain), Victoria Batha (stroke), Kelsey Wiemer (three seat), Alex Pines (two seat) and Jess Arevalo (bow) had a time of 8:05.6, a 1:31 second improvement.
