The Orange softball team went 2-2 during the weekend beginning with a sweep of Providence 6-0 and 3-0. The doubleheader was suspended through four and a half on Friday and resumed on Saturday. The back-to-back shutouts were the 11th all-time in school history and it was the first BIG EAST shutout sweep for the Orange since blanking Virginia Tech, 5-0 and 3-0, in 2002. Freshman third baseman Hallie Gibbs hit the program's eighth all-time grand slam when she sent a deep shot over the leftfield fence during the second inning of game one.
Connecticut defeated Syracuse, 9-1, in five innings and, 7-6, on Sunday. The Orange threatened with a runner on second base in the bottom of the seventh with junior catcher Amy Kelley at the plate, but an inward-blowing wind held Kelley's shot in the air and about 10 feet short of clearing the centerfield fence. Senior outfielder Chanel Roehner was 4-for-7 on the day, while Kelley hit her seventh home run, a three-run shot, of the season and added two more RBI.
