VILLANOVA, Pa. – Graduate Aulton Kohn became the third Syracuse student-athlete to capture an individual event title after a first-place finish in the 100m dash at the final day of the BIG EAST Championships, hosted by Villanova at Jumbo Elliott Track. The Orange men (55) and women (47) each finished ninth overall.
“We saw a number of good things over the three days at Villanova,” said third-year Syracuse head coach Chris Fox. “We won three event titles and had several All-BIG EAST performers. However, we’re not in a position to become complacent at this point in the season. We hope to use this weekend as a building block and we anticipate improvement down the stretch.”
Kohn joined seniors Jillian Drouin and Kyle Heath as members of the Orange to hoist the hardware at the three-day event. Drouin repeated as the heptathlon champion with an NCAA Automatic-qualifying total of 5,554 points. Heath posted the top time in the men’s 3000m steeplechase, clocking in at 8:57.39.
Kohn totaled his second career outdoor championship and the fifth of his career overall. He claimed the 2007 outdoor championship in the 200m dash, the 2005 and 2006 indoor titles in the 60m and the 2007 indoor crown in the 200m dash.
The Orange boasted nine All-BIG EAST performances, including two each from graduate Sheron Mark and Heath. Mark claimed her fifth career outdoor all-conference honor and seventh overall following a third-place finish and distance of 12.61m in the triple jump. She earned All-BIG EAST distinction on Saturday with a second-place finish (6.13m) in the long jump.
Heath’s stellar track & field season continued Sunday after a second-place finish in the men’s 5000m run. He tallied an IC4A-qualifying time of 14:26.79, earning All-BIG EAST accolades.
Senior Ramon Sosa finished second in the 110m hurdles and garnered All-BIG EAST honors with a time of 13.85 seconds. He was edged by Pittsburgh’s Mike Wray, who posted a time of 13.83 seconds en route to the title. Sosa entered the weekend as the event’s defending champion following a first-place finish in 2007.
Rookie Flings Owusu-Agyapong made her BIG EAST Championship debut in emphatic fashion, placing third in the women’s 100m dash and claiming all-conference accolades with an NCAA Regional-qualifying time of 11.65 seconds. She totaled a time of 11.76 seconds in Saturday’s preliminary heat.
On Saturday, senior Kaity Lambracht earned All-BIG EAST honors with a third-place finish and total of 5,329 points in the heptathlon.
