
Rowan Named Tewaaraton Trophy Finalist

BALTIMORE, Md. -- Junior Katie Rowan has been selected as one of five finalists for the 2008 Tewaaraton Trophy which is awarded to the nation’s top lacrosse player. Rowan is joined on the ballot by Northwestern’s Christy Finch and Hannah Nielsen and Maryland’s Dana Dobbie and Kelly Kasper. Rowan is the first Orange women’s lacrosse player to be named a finalist for college lacrosse’s most prestigious award.
Rowan is enjoying a record-setting season in 2008. She has set single-season school marks with 123 points and 57 assists. Rowan and teammate Christina Dove are tied for the top spot on the single-season goals scored chart with 66 each this season. Rowan leads the nation in points and points per game (6.83 ppg.) and ranks second in assists and assists per game (3.17 apg.). In addition, she has become Syracuse’s all-time leader in points (265) and assists (94) and is tied for the top spot on the career goals scored list with 171.
A unanimous All-BIG EAST First Team selection, Rowan earned the BIG EAST Attack Player of the Year award and was named the BIG EAST Championship Most Outstanding Player after leading the Orange to its second-straight tournament title. She set a championship record with 13 points in two games.
Rowan and the other finalists are invited to the Tewaaraton Awards Banquet on Thursday, May 29 at the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C. where the winner of this year’s award will be announced.
SU men’s lacrosse player Mike Leveille will also be at the banquet. Leveille, also a Delmar, N.Y. product, is one of the five men’s Tewaaraton Trophy finalists. Syracuse is the only school to have both a men’s and women’s finalist.
The Orange is the No. 5 seed in the NCAA Championship and opens tournament play on Sunday against Towson at 3:30 p.m. in the Carrier Dome.
