PITTSBURGH, Pa.- The Orange softball team (12-14, 1-7) defeated Pittsburgh (18-17, 4-9) 9-6 for SU's first conference win of the season. Jadyn Burney and Erika Zamora hit home runs in the first two innings while Kaimi Tulua hit a grand slam. Madison Knight's double in the top of the eighth inning put the Orange over the Panthers to claim the victory.
HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ
On the second pitch of the game, leadoff hitter Jadyn Burney sent the ball over the left field fence, adding a run to the board for the Orange. Erika Zamora followed in the top of the second inning, hitting a solo home run to give 'Cuse an early 2-0 lead.Â
The Panthers answered back in the bottom of the third inning, as Ahmari Brayden homered to center field.Â
In the top of the fifth inning, Lauren Fox hit the ball up the middle for a hit. Jadyn Burney singled through the right side to reach first base. Madelyn Lopez's perfectly placed bunt filled the bases as Vanessa Flores stepped up to the plate. A line drive to the third baseman turned into a double play as Fox was tagged out. Madison Knight drew a walk to load the bases once again. With two outs on the board, Kaimi Tulua took full advantage of her at-bat, hitting a grand slam home run over the center field fence. Â
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Pitt's Addison Toczek hit a two-run home run to center field to chip into the Orange's lead. Heading into the final inning of play, Pitt brought a runner home before Camryn Murphy hit a two-run home run to tie the game 6-6. Â
At the top of the eighth inning, Burney and Lopez bunted, and both reached base after two Pitt errors. Knight stepped up to the plate, hitting the ball into deep left field for a double, adding two runs to the board. Kendall Gaunt drew a walk, and Grace Weaver singled, loading the bases. Erika Zamora drew a walk, sending Knight across home plate to take a 9-6 lead. The Panthers were unable to answer in the bottom of the inning, giving Syracuse its first conference win of the season.Â
