NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Attackman Mike Leveille (Delmar, N.Y.) was selected to the 2008 ESPN The Magazine Men’s At-Large Academic All-America First Team on Tuesday, June 10. Leveille garnered more votes than any other candidate and was named the University Division At-Large Academic All-American of the Year.
Leveille is the first men’s lacrosse student-athlete in school history to earn first-team recognition and is Syracuse’s first first-team All-American in any sport since Matt Tarullo (football) in 2004. He joins Greg Rommel as the only SU men’s lacrosse student-athletes to earn national Academic All-America honors. Rommel was a third-team choice in 2007.
The Academic All-America program is administered by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). The Men’s At-Large program includes the sports of fencing, golf, gymnastics, hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, tennis, volleyball, water polo and wrestling. To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
Leveille, the 2008 Tewaaraton Trophy winner as the player of the year in college lacrosse, led the Orange to its 10th NCAA title and a 16-2 overall record. A first-team USILA All-American, Leveille tallied 11 goals in the NCAA Championship and was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player.
He concluded the season ranked third nationally in points per game (4.61), seventh in goals per game (2.72) and seventh in assists per contest (1.89). Leveille paced Syracuse in all three categories, notching 49 goals, 34 assists and 83 points. His 49 tallies is tied with Matt Riter for seventh on the school’s single-season list and his 83 points is tied for the 10th-best season total in SU history.
Leveille finished his career with a 57-game point scoring streak, fourth-longest streak all-time at SU. He ranks ninth at Syracuse in career goals scored (132), 12th in career assists (83) and 12th in career points (215).
Off the field, Leveille took home the 2008 Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award as the nation’s most outstanding senior men’s lacrosse student-athlete. He was also a first-team ESPN The Magazine At-Large All-District choice, which resulted in his name being forwarded to the national Academic All-America ballot. Leveille was also honored as the male recipient of the Soladay Award recognizing athletic and academic achievements, community service and leadership at the 2008 ‘Cuse Awards in April.
Leveille graduated with a 3.8 GPA in accounting and was very involved in a variety of community service activities. He received his bachelor’s degree on May 11 and was named to the SU Athletic Director’s Honor Roll during each of his semesters on campus.
