
Future Orange Honored

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Four members of Syracuse's incoming freshman class have been selected to The Post-Standard's 2008 All-Central New York Girls Lacrosse Team, as selected by a panel of area coaches and sportswriters. Sarah Holden and Nicole Perkins were named to the first team, while Kelsey Nangle and Janelle Stegeland were second-team honorees.
Holden, a midfielder, had 78 goals and 25 assists for Marcellus High School in 2008. She also picked up 67 ground balls. Holden, who finished her career with 239 goals and 67 assists, was named to the All-CNY Second Team as a junior and was a third-team selection as a sophomore.
Perkins started on defense for the 2008 state champion West Genesee Wildcats, registering 69 ground balls, 31 draw controls and 48 caused turnovers. In her career, Perkins picked up 155 ground ball, caused 89 turnovers and recorded 64 draw controls. It marks the second time Perkins has earned All-CNY honors, claiming a spot on the second team as a junior.
A native of Auburn, N.Y. and graduate of Skaneateles High School, Nangle was named to the All-CNY Second Team for the second straight year. Stegeland, a graduate of Cortland High School, makes her first appearance on the All-CNY squad.
The Orange, under the guidance of first-year head coach Gary Gait, enjoyed the most successful season in the history of the program in 2008. Syracuse won a school-record 18 games, claimed the BIG EAST regular-season and tournament titles, and made the school's first appearance in the Final Four. The Orange led the nation in scoring and set NCAA single-season records for most points and goals scored.
