SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The 2008 NCAA champion Syracuse University men’s lacrosse team was recognized in a community-wide celebration on Saturday, June 7. The Orange appeared on the main stage at the Taste of Syracuse in Clinton Square prior to a live concert by former SU lacrosse standout Mike Powell and his band “Villain’s Trust.”
Orange Director of Athletics Dr. Daryl Gross joined Coach John Desko and the team on stage to celebrate its NCAA record 10th men’s lacrosse championship. The Orange secured the title with a 13-10 victory against archrival Johns Hopkins on May 26.
Several local dignitaries were also on hand to congratulate the Orange. Syracuse Mayor Matt Driscoll and Onondaga County Executive Joanie Mahoney proclaimed June 7, 2008 "SU Lacrosse Champions Day" in Onondaga County and the City of Syracuse.
Desko authored one of the most dramatic turnarounds in lacrosse history, leading SU to a school-record tying 16 victories and an overall mark of 16-2 after missing the playoffs last season. It was fourth NCAA Championship for the Orange under Desko. His four NCAA titles are the third-most by a Division I lacrosse coach.
The Orange women’s lacrosse team was also recognized Saturday for its own record-breaking campaign. The women’s team, under the direction of first-year head coach Gary Gait, won a school-record 18 games and advanced to the Final Four for the first time in school history. SU set an NCAA record with 380 goals and won the BIG EAST Tournament Championship for the second straight year.
