Donte Greene, who started as a freshman at Syracuse before opting for the NBA Draft, had a not-so-subtle 40 points in his debut with the Houston Rockets in the NBA Summer League. Greene led his new teammates to a 100-97 victory against the Phoenix Suns.
Greene converted 12-of-20 from the field, including 5-of-10 from the three-point line, and made 11-of-12 from the foul line. He added three rebounds, three assists and two steals.
He was selected by the Memphis Grizzlies in the draft's first round and was promptly traded to Houston.
Greene was Syracuse's top scorer in 2007-08, averaging 17.7 points per game. He was a member of the BIG EAST Conference All-Rookie Team.
Another former Syracuse player, Darryl Watkins, is playing with the Los Angeles Clippers' entry in the NBA Summer League. Watkins played for the Sacramento Kings last winter before he was released December 10, 2007. He spent the rest of the season with the Iowa Energy of the NBDL and averaged 8.5 points and 5.9 rebounds per outing.
