Watertown Trio to be Honored in Hometown

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Orange lacrosse standouts Kenny Nims, Greg Niewieroski and Brendan Loftus will be honored by the Italian-American Civic Association as part of a “Special Recognition Night” in their hometown of Watertown, N.Y. on Wednesday, July 30. The event will celebrate the Watertown natives’ contribution to Syracuse’s 2008 national championship run.
Nims, Niewieroski and Loftus will each receive a special award at the event which starts at 7 p.m. and will take place at the Italian-American Civic Association located at 192 Bellew Ave. in Watertown. Tickets are $10 and available by calling 315-782-1080. No tickets will be sold at the door. Legendary Syracuse head coach Roy Simmons Jr. will also be on hand as a special guest speaker.
Nims, a rising senior, started all 18 games in 2008 and earned honorable mention All-America honors. He was second on the team in goals (34), assists (24), and total points with 58. Nims netted two goals in the national title game against Johns Hopkins.
Niewieroski, who is also entering his senior campaign, scored 23 goals for the Orange while starting all 18 games this past season. He contributed an assist in the championship game victory.
Loftus completed his Orange career at Gillette Stadium in May. He scored 21 goals and dished out four assists in 2008. Against Georgetown, he tallied a personal-best four goals, including the game-winner in double overtime. Loftus is currently a member of Major League Lacrosse’s (MLL) San Francisco Dragons.
The special awards will mark the second time in 10 days the trio will be honored. Nims, Niewieroski and Loftus were recognized by the city of Watertown on July 21 at the Flower Memorial Library for their role in Syracuse’s success.
