
Tanger Joins Goodale in Olympic Final on Sunday

Beijing, China – Former Syracuse University rower Helen Tanger ’01 helped lead the Netherlands women’s eight rowing team to a second-place finish in Repechage 1 at the Shunyi Olympic Rowing-Canoeing Park. The performance will advance the Netherlands advance to Sunday’s final. Tanger’s crew will face another Syracuse alum, Anna Goodale ’05, who helped the United States women’s eight rowing team advance to Sunday’s final by winning Heat 1 earlier in the week.
The Netherlands women’s eight of coxswain Ester Workel, Annemiek de Haan, Sarah Siegelaar, Helen Tanger, Annemarieke van Rumpt, Roline Repelaer van Driel, Nienki Kingma, Marlies Smulders and Femke Dekker finished 1.08 seconds behind Canada and 0.52 seconds faster than Great Britain. Australia also qualified for the finals with a time of 6:12.52.
The crew took the lead during the first 500-meters, but was unable to hold on to its early lead and trialed Canada from 1,000-meter mark until the finish.
Six countries, Great Britain, Canada, United States, Romania, Netherlands and Australia will race for the gold, silver and bronze medals on Sunday.
