Maggie Befort Named to Preseason All-BIG EAST Team – Syracuse Picked Second
Providence, R.I. – Syracuse sophomore back Maggie Befort has been selected to the 2008 All-BIG EAST Preseason Field Hockey Team which was released on Thursday, August 14. Befort was elected to the 11-player squad in a vote by the league’s seven head coaches. In addition, Syracuse, who finished tied for fourth last season, was chosen to place second with 27 points, including one first place selection.
Syracuse was one of five teams to place a student-athlete on the preseason all-conference team. Connecticut led the way with four preseason all-conference nods, including the Preseason Defensive Player of the Year, in Jennifer Kleinhans. Providence had three selections and Louisville had two. Rutgers’ Amy Lewis was named the Preseason Offensive Player of the Year.
Befort, a womensfieldhockey.com All-Rookie member, tallied 12 points (four goals, four assists) during conference play. The Mechanicsburg, Pa., native earned BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week once and BIG EAST Honor Roll accolades twice last season.
Last season, head coach Ange Bradley was named the 2007 BIG EAST Coach of the Year after leading the Orange to a 12-7 record during the regular season and the No. 4 seed in the BIG EAST Championship. The 12 wins were the most by a Syracuse coach in her first season at the helm. SU participated in the BIG EAST Tournament for the first time since 2005 and its national ranking of No. 18 on October 9 and 16 were the highest since October of 2004.
