BEIJING -- Carli Lloyd's goal in overtime gave the U.S. Women's National Team a 1-0 victory against Brazil to win its second straight Olympic gold medal on Thursday in Beijing. Lloyd's goal came six minutes into the first overtime period.
Syracuse head coach Phil Wheddon, who serves as an assistant coach and goalkeeper coach for the U.S. National Team, earns his second goal medal. He also was on the coaching in 2004 when the USA also defeated Brazil in the Olympic final. With Wheddon's guidance, U.S. goalkeeper Hope Solo played every minute of every game, recording a goals against average of less than a goal per game. In six games, she recorded three shutouts.
The women's soccer squad is the first Syracuse team in action in 2008, opening the 2008 season on Friday against Albany at 7 p.m. at the SU Soccer Stadium.
