PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Freshman Casey Ramirez is the BIG EAST Women’s Soccer Rookie of the Week after her performance in the Orange’s season opener against Albany. Ramirez was credited with the game-winning goal on the first shot of her collegiate career as Syracuse began the 2008 campaign with a 3-1 win against the Great Danes.
With the Orange leading 1-0, Ramirez took a pass from Chelsea Berry and found the back of the net with a shot to the right corner of the goal that gave Syracuse a two-goal advantage 3:59 into the action.
Ramirez is the first Syracuse women’s soccer student-athlete to earn the conference’s Rookie of the Week award since 2005 when Kim Niedzwiecki received the honor for her performance during the week of Sept. 18-25.
The Orange goes for its second straight win when it takes on William & Mary on Friday at 5 p.m. in Harrisonburg, Va. as part of the JMU/Comfort Inn Harrisonburg Invitational.
