With 28 days until the Orange football team kicks off the 2008 season at Northwestern (12:00 p.m., ESPN2), the team reported for preseason camp today. The Sunday schedule included check-in, photo sessions and administrative and team meetings. The energy carried through the Iocolano-Petty Football Wing throughout the day.
"It is a really exciting time to get the season going," said senior offensive guard Ryan Durand. "We will start off with having a great training camp. Everyone is here, pumped and ready to go. Everyone is ready to work hard. You can feel the excitement in the air."
The 2008 squad features 13 returning starters, including six on offense, five on defense, and two specialists.
"Camp is a real good chance to hone your skills and just get that cohesiveness that you need offensively, defensively and on special teams," said senior linebacker Jake Flaherty. "There is a lot of encouragement right now from the veterans. During the Spring we had some young guys who really showed great things. It is going to be such a team effort -- a team defense. That is our mantra right now. We are looking forward to seeing the benefit of that."
The team is committed to making the most of each practice session during preseason camp in order to be prepared for the opener on August 30.
"We are focused on getting Syracuse where it needs to be," said senior fullback Tony Fiammetta. "We need to stay focused on the day, focus on the now, making sure we are getting better second of the day and using all the time you have to get better. We can't really worry about Northwestern now, we have to focus on practice tomorrow."
