USTFCCCA Adds Some Orange to the Women's 2008 Division I All-Academic Track and Field Team

TEMPE, Ariz. – Four members of the Syracuse Orange were named to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) women’s 2008 Division I All-Academic Track & Field team on Tuesday, August 5. Syracuse’s four helped bring together a record total of 468 student-athletes representing 140 Division I institutions.
Recent graduates Jillian Drouin, Kaity Lambracht, and Sheron Mark along with now junior Annabelle Pellerin were all recognized as part of the 2008 Division I All-Academic Track and Field team. The USTFCCCA honors Division I individuals for their academic and athletic achievements during the indoor and outdoor track and field seasons.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track & Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have met either the NCAA Division I Indoor automatic or provisional qualifying standard or the NCAA Division I Outdoor regional or national qualifying standard in their respective event.
Drouin’s nod to the All-Academic squad only augments the legacy she left on the oval at Syracuse. The Ontario native was named to the to the ESPN The Magazine Women’s Cross Country/Track & Field Academic All-America First Team last spring for the second time after garnering the same homor in 2007.
The Orange record holder in pentathlon, heptathlon and outdoor high jump, Drouin gathered an 11th-place finish in the heptathlon at last year’s NCAA Outdoor Championship. The three-time BIG EAST Champion in the high jump, pentathlon and heptathlon was tabbed as the 2007-08 BIG EAST Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Lambracht, an at-large selection for the 2008 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship, joined Drouin on the All-Academic Track and Field team after finishing third in the heptathlon at the BIG EAST Championship with a personal-best 5,329 points. The Whitehouse Station, N.J. native took second place at the ECAC Championship, tallying 5,321 points. Lambracht was 23rd at the 2008 NCAA Outdoor Championship in the heptathlon, scoring 5,234 points.
Mark, a native of Trinidad, was appointed to the All-Academic Track & Field team with a personal best 6.13m in the long jump for a second-place finish at the BIG EAST Championship. In addition, Mark tallied a season best spring of 12.96m in the triple jump at the Spec Towns Invitational. Both outdoor marks were team bests during the 2008 campaign.
The lone member left on the Orange’s array for this upcoming season, Pellerin’s academic credentials paired up with her first place garnering at the Big Red invitational by way of a 1.75m leap in the high jump rounded out the four-member billing for the 2008 Division I All-Academic Track and Field team.
"We’re certainly going to miss those three graduates," Syracuse’s head track & field and cross country coach Chris Fox stated on Wednesday. "The fact that they’ve garnered more academic awards than athletic ones goes to show the complete package they’ve represented. All four of them certainly set a high standard for this year’s team."
Rice University and the University of Wisconsin led all institutions with 13 student-athletes each on the All-Academic team. Arkansas and Oregon followed close behind, each placing 12 student-athletes on the team. Nebraska placed 11 student-athletes on the team.
Syracuse put together the 14th best cumulative grade point average in the country with a 3.402. 117 Division I women’s track and field programs were recognized as 2008 USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Teams.
"I believe this recognition is very important for our team and for the University," Fox said. "It makes us a more legitimate unit in the academic sense rather than just an athletic team. Striving to be successful in both the classroom and on the track is what every collegiate team hopes for and I feel we’ve accomplished that."
The USTFCCCA named Arizona State the 2008 Division I Women’s Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field Scholar Team of the Year on Tuesday. The Sun Devils won the NCAA Division I Indoor Championship in March, scoring 51 points to defend their 2007 team title.
The selection of the All-Academic Indoor and Outdoor Scholar Teams of the Year is based on a combination of academic and athletic achievements with the top honor going to the team that had the combination of best overall finish at the Division I Indoor and/or Outdoor Championships and cumulative GPA.
To be nominated, the team must carry a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade-point average.
