COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The seventh-ranked Syracuse Orange field hockey team travels to for the Old Line State the Terrapin Invitational hosted by the University of Maryland. Syracuse will play the top-ranked Terrapins on Saturday, Sept. 13, at 11 a.m. and the Fightin’ Blue Hens of Delaware on Sunday, Sept. 14, at noon.
Syracuse jumped up 11 places to No. 7 on the latest STX/NFHCA Division I Coaches Poll. The ranking is two spots higher than the program’s previous best of ninth, which it achieved in 1990 and 1993. SU made the largest jump up the poll out of any team after the first week of regular season play.
Reigning BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week senior midfielder Shannon Taylor leads the Orange with 15 points off six goals and three assists. Sophomore forward Lindsey Conrad and freshman midfielder Martina Loncarica are also in double-figures with 14 and 13 points, respectively. Loncarica is also first on the team with five assists.
Syracuse is 0-4 all-time against the Terrapins. The Orange is 0-2 all-time in Maryland, including a 6-0 setback in the most recent matchup in 2001.
Maryland (4-0) dominated ninth-ranked Michigan, 5-1 in its last outing. The Terrapins scored 13 goals last weekend, after defeating No. 8 Old Dominion, 8-1, on Friday. Sophomore All-American Katie O’Donnell scored twice and assisted on another in the win. O’Donnell, was selected as the Atlantic Coast Conference Field Hockey Player of the Week. She scored a career-high four goals against ODU. O’Donnell added another pair of goals at Michigan. She is first in the ACC in points (16) and goals (7). The Terrapins are first in the ACC in scoring margin (4.25), scoring average (4.75), shutouts (0.50), goals-against-average (0.50), goals allowed (0.50). Alicia Grater is first in the ACC in shutouts (0.50). Maryland has outscored it first four opponents, 19-2. The Terrapins have outshot its opponents, 80-22. Maryland also has three times as many penalty corner, 29-10.
