SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Senior Marissa Kanemura led the Orange defensively tallying a team-high 10 digs versus the Saints. Freshmen Noemie Lefebvre and Erin Little each contributed six digs in the 3-0 setback to Siena.
Sophomore Hayley Todd also added to the Orange defense with four total blocks, while junior Sarah Morton registered two total blocks. Morton and junior Annabelle Pellerin recorded six kills apiece and Little and junior Kacie MacTavish both posted five kills.
While the Saints grabbed the first point of the match, Syracuse stepped up to take the lead early on in set one. The Orange capitalized on numerous Saint errors to take a six point lead about midway through the frame. The Saints, however, managed to hold Syracuse to only one point in the next eight plays and tied the set, 16-16. A kill from Little gave SU the lead, but the set became a back and forth affair. The Saints again tied the match at 22-22. The Orange took a timeout in an effort to break the Saints momentum, but a kill by Saint Amanda Begin and two SU errors closed the set for Siena, 25-22.
A kill by Pellerin put the Orange on the board first in set two. Like in set one, Syracuse was able to develop a lead early on, but it was not enough to hold off the Saints. With the set tied 14-14, Syracuse was able to grab the next three points. Siena took a timeout and was able to come back to tie the set again, 19-19. Despite two kills from MacTavish, the Orange could not hold off the Saints and Siena won set two, 25-21.
Set three was close from the beginning. Neither team could grab a significant lead until the final third of the frame. With the match tied 14-14, Siena took control and scored the next six points. The Orange was able to put four more points on the board, but Siena maintained control and won the final set, 25-18.
The Big Orange Tournament continues this afternoon with a match between Northeastern and Ohio at 2:30 p.m., followed by a match between Siena and Army at 5 p.m. Syracuse plays again this evening at 7 p.m.
