SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse University volleyball team closed out its five-game weekend against Akron this afternoon. Freshman Hallie Morse came up big against the Zips with 32 assists, despite the Orange suffering a 3-1 setback to Akron.
Junior Kacie MacTavish had a team-high 16 kills against the Zips and freshman Erin Little was second with nine kills. In addition to her 32 assists, Morse tallied the first two solo blocks of her collegiate career. She is currently second on the team in assists with 182. Freshman Ashley Williams led Syracuse in digs with 10.
While the Zips managed to dominate sets one and two, the Orange came back with a vengeance in set three. Thanks to an error by the Zips, SU was on the board first. While the Zips took a slight lead for much of the first part of the frame, Syracuse kept the score close, never letting the Zips grab any substantial momentum. Down, 20-18, Morse stepped up to serve and earned an ace. Sophomore Hayley Todd grabbed a kill off the next Morse serve to tie the game, 20-20. From there, the Orange took control adding two kills and capitalizing on three Akron errors to win set three.
Set four was a back and forth affair. Neither team could establish a lead until midway through when the Orange grabbed five-straight points to take the lead, 18-15. However, the Zips managed to hold Syracuse at 18, while they grabbed the next five points to lead, 20-18. From there, the score tied three times before the Zips closed the set with two-consecutive service aces, 26-24.
Syracuse has the week to rest before heading to the Colgate Invitational on Saturday, September 20. The Orange will face Princeton at 1:30 p.m., followed by Colgate at 5 p.m. Syracuse will play its next home match in Manley Field House on October 3 versus BIG EAST opponent UConn.
