Syracuse will recognize the history and tradition of the Orange football program at every home game during the 2008 season with honorary game captains. These individuals will participate in all activities with the team beginning the night before the game. The honorary captains will address the team, participate in the Quad Walk and accompany 2008 Orange captains Tony Fiammetta, Jake Flaherty, Patrick Shadle and Bruce Williams for the pre-game coin toss.
Former Orange standout Jeff Mangram will be the honorary captain for the Orange’s home opener against Akron on Saturday, Sept. 6 (3:30 P.M.). As a strong safety, Mangram anchored the Syracuse secondary from 1985-88. He was a member of the 1987 team that finished the regular season with an 11-0 record and earned a berth in the Sugar Bowl. The Orange tied Auburn in the Sugar Bowl. Syracuse finished the season ranked No. 4 in the final AP and UPI polls. During his four-year career Mangram recorded 193 total tackles, including a career-high 61 tackles as a freshman where he started at cornerback.
"This week we bring back a former student-athlete, Jeff Mangram, who finished up in 1988, as our honorary captain," said head coach Greg Robinson. "Jeff has a great story to tell. Not only was he a fine, fine football player, but from where he started his career as a student-athlete to where he is today, I think he's a great role model who comes out of the SU football community. I look forward to having him address our football team and having the opportunity to go out as an honorary captain with our captains for the Akron game."
Following his graduation, Mangram – a policy studies major – earned his Master’s degree in social studies education. He distinguished himself in the classroom as a social studies teacher and was a finalist for the New York State Teacher of the Year award. Mangram then returned to Syracuse to complete his Ph.D. in the School of Education and is currently an assistant professor in the teaching and leadership department at SU.
