SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse women’s rowing squad had its first official practice this morning. The Orange begins the 2008-09 campaign with enthusiasm, anticipation and the goals of bringing a BIG EAST Championship back to Syracuse in addition to receiving an NCAA team bid.
"This is going to be a great year for Syracuse Rowing,” head coach Kris Sanford said. “The team is working hard, is focused, and understands the importance of every single practice as we begin the climb toward achieving our goals."
Sanford welcomes a strong class of freshmen and a host of returners, including five members of last year’s varsity eight, to achieve those goals. The Orange will also be bolstered by the return of two varsity-eight caliber performers that missed time last year due to injury.
"We have tweaked the attitude on the team a bit this year. Everyone understands that we race the best teams in the country and that to compete with them we must step up our practice regime in both quality and quantity,” Sanford said. “People are taking responsibility for themselves and are holding each other accountable to the team. The atmosphere is very positive and the environment that we have created is very supportive of achieving the highest goals. Only good things will come from this."
The women’s rowing team opens the 2008-09 season at the Head of the Genesee in Rochester, N.Y. on Sunday, October 12.
