Syracuse, N.Y. – Freshman Erin Little, sophomore Hayley Todd, and junior Kacie MacTavish each led the Orange with eight kills apiece in Syracuse’s 3-0 sweep of the Big Red at Cornell. Freshman Noemie Lefebvre and junior Sarah Morton each added six kills, while senior April Quigley recorded 31 assists.
Defensively, Little led the team with seven block assists. Morton and Todd also contributed six block assists.
"From last weekend, our team improved offensively at the middle and right side positions," head coach Jing Pu said. "Cornell had four front players between 6'0" and 6'2", and our effective and successful blocking gave us the control to earn the victory."
Cornell had control of the lead throughout the first set, but the Orange never let them get too far ahead. When Syracuse tied the match at 21-21, Cornell took a timeout in hopes of breaking Syracuse’s momentum. It was to no avail as the Orange won the set 25-22. Morton, Todd and MacTavish all tallied three kills, while Quigley registered 12 assists to lead the Orange offense. Little recorded four block assists and Lefebvre had four digs to handle Cornell on defense.
The Orange took an early lead in the second set starting off 5-1 against the Big Red. From there, Syracuse didn’t let up. The team maintained at least a three-point lead throughout the first part of the frame. With the score 18-13, Cornell took a timeout. While the Big Red came back to score a point right off the timeout, the Orange were able to maintain control of the set. Syracuse held the Big Red to 18 points as it was able to score the final two points to win the second set.
A kill by Little had the Orange on the board first in the third set. The set remained close until about midway through as neither team was able to develop a substantial lead. By midway, the Orange went on a five point run to take a 15-11 lead. Cornell used the first of two timeouts in hopes of slowing the Orange but it didn’t appear to affect the Orange as the team continued to increase its lead to 22-16. Cornell took its second timeout and managed to come within four points of the Orange, but kills from Little and Morton sealed the deal.
The Orange is 7-8 going into its BIG EAST opener against Rutgers (1-8) Sunday, September 28. Action begins at 2 p.m. in Piscataway, N.J.
