PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Syracuse Orange field hockey game at Providence College, originally scheduled for 6 p.m. today has been moved up to a 5 p.m. start. The change was made due to potential weather concerns in the area for later this evening.
The second-ranked Syracuse Orange field hockey team (8-0, 1-0) returns to the road, where it is 5-0, for two contests in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Syracuse travels to BIG EAST foe RV Providence (5-3, 0-1) on Friday, September 26 at 6 p.m. The Orange finishes the weekend at RV Massachusetts (6-2) on Sunday, September 28 at 1 p.m.

With its 3-0 win against No. 11 Louisville on September 19, the Orange secured its fourth win of the season against a top-11 team. SU defeated No. 1 Maryland, 2-1, on September 12, No. 10 Michigan State, 3-1 on September 3 and No. 8 Old Dominion, 5-0, to begin the year on August 31. Syracuse continues to make history, improving to 8-0 for the first time in its 37-year history, with its 10-0 victory versus New Hampshire on Sunday, September 21. Syracuse climbed to No. 2 in the STX/NFHCA Division I Coaches Poll after improving to a program-best 8-0 with victories versus No. 11 Louisville and New Hampshire last weekend. The NCAA also released the first women’s division I field hockey RPI with the Orange taking the No. 4 position.
The reigning BIG EAST Offensive Player, ECAC Division I Player and womensfieldhockey.com Rookie of the Week, freshman midfielder Martina Loncarica’s team-best 28 points is tied for ninth on SU’s single-season record chart. She also has tallied a team-high 12 assists. Senior midfielder Shannon Taylor has scored a team-best 10 goals. Senior goalkeeper Heather Hess has started all eight games in cage, recording a 0.84 goals-against-average and a .857 saves percentage.
Providence only played one game last week when it traveled to UConn for its first conference game of the season. On September 19, the Friars lost 2-1 in overtime. Providence tied the game 1-1 at the 22:10 mark as Julie Ruggieri tipped in a free hit taken by Adrienne Marois. The two teams were each held scoreless in the second half of play. At the end of regulation, Connecticut held a 14-11 advantage in shots, while the Friars owned a 7-4 edge in penalty corners. Ruggieri, Marois and Ashlyn Hudson lead Providence with nine points each. Ruggieri and Marois have scored a team-best four goals and Hudson has dished out a team-high five assists. Rachel Chamberlain has played every minute in cage, recording a 1.11 goals-against-average and a .763 saves percentage.
Syracuse’s fifth-most familiar foe, SU leads the all-time series, 15-6-4. The Orange has won eight of the last 11 contests, but has lost the last two, including last season’s 3-2 setback at Providence. Syracuse is 6-1-3 all-time at Providence.
