EAST LANSING, Mich. – No. 18 Syracuse and No. 10 Michigan State meet on Sunday in a non-conference matchup at noon. SU looks to improve to 4-0 for the second consecutive year and just the fourth time in 37 seasons. The Spartans are looking for their fourth straight win.
Syracuse holds a 3-2 all-time record against Michigan State. The Orange won the first three meetings, but has lost the last two. SU is 1-1 all-time in East Lansing, Mich. The Spartans and Orange last met in 2002 as part of the BIG EAST/Big Ten Challenge. Michigan State recorded a 5-0 against Syracuse, and extended its shutout streak to three games.
The Orange moved to 3-0 with an 8-3 win at Central Michigan on Friday. Sophomore forward Shelby Schraden became the fourth SU player to register a hat-trick this season. Senior midfielder Shannon Taylor added two goals and freshman midfielder Martina Loncarica became the 13th Syracuse player to record three assists in a game. Sophomore back Maggie Befort tallied two assists on SU corners.
Taylor leads the Orange with 15 points, Loncarica is second with 13.
The 10th-ranked Michigan State field hockey team remained undefeated with a 3-2 overtime win against Stanford on Wednesday, September 3. Junior Jeamie Deacon recorded the game-winning goal 3:23 into extra time. MSU is now 3-0 overall for just the eighth time in 27 seasons. Gwen Riley leads the team in scoring with three goals and four assists for 10 points. She also ranks first in the Big Ten in goals, points and assists. Geraldine Raynor is second on the team in scoring with six points on three goals. Elissa Unger ranks third in the Big Ten with a 1.64 goals against average and is fourth with a .583 save percentage.
