Colgate, Cortland, Delhi, Mohawk Valley, Oneida, Syracuse and Williams are the teams scheduled to participate along with a number of athletes who will compete unattached.
In the first meet of the season, the Orange trekked to neighboring Ithaca, N.Y. to take part in the non-team scoring meet at the Cornell Relays on Dec.6. Syracuse started off on the right foot in the season opener in what appears to be a strong campaign for the SU tracksters this season.
The Orange women brought home four first-place finishes in Ithaca. Freshman Natalie Busby posted the best time in the 5K run with a time of 17:53.67. Juniors Uhunoma Osazuwa and Annabelle Pellerin were each awarded top-billing in the 60m hurdles and high jump competitions, respectively. Osazuwa dusted the competition in 9.00 seconds flat while Pellerin, also a member of the Orange volleyball team, cleared 1.68m (5-06) in the high jump. Sophomore Kelsey Rubeor represented SU in the field, picking up first place in the shot put with a lob of 11.85m (38-10.50).
The men's distance contingent continued its success from the cross country season when five Orange garnered top 10 finishes in the 5K event. Junior Erin Schirm emerged first for SU in 15:08.33 for second place. Senior Robert Cary turned out a time of 15:33.57 for third place while second-year member Mike Brocks finished directly behind Cary in 15:41.92. Sophomore Brady Becker and freshman Roman Agosta rounded out the top positions with times of 15:43.69 and 15:44.79, in that order, for sixth and seventh place.
Alongside the men, the women's distance runners churned out a fine day as sophomore Liz McCarter posted a third-place finish with a time of 18:05.40 while juniors Lynne Mundy and Lisa Giacometti closed out their day in fifth and sixth, respectively with marks of 18:33.45 and 18:44.90. Sophomore Tricia Wardwell and senior Emily Goncalves provided the Orange with runs of 19:25.03 and 19:47.08 for eighth and 11th place finishes.
In the field events, senior Mike Chitro leaped 1.99m (6-66.25) for second place in the high jump and sophomore Victor Nwosu placed third in the long jump with a mark of 6.74 (22-01.50). Sophomore Kwaku Boah, also a member of the Syracuse football team, tossed a seventh-place mark of 16.22m (53-02.75) turned in the weight throw event.
For the women's trials in the field, junior Melissa Romero took second in the high jump with a vault of 1.65m (5-05.00) whereas sophomore Priscilla Ilarrasa completed the event in fourth with a 1.55m (5-01.00) jump.
In addition to her 60m hurdles crown, Osazuwa grabbed second place in the long jump with a jump of 5.49m (18-00.25). Senior Kayla Carter finished in fifth in the same event with a leap of 5.33m (17-06.00). Carter earned fourth in the triple jump with a measure of 11.24m (36-10.50).
After Syracuse finishes up hosting its first meet of the season, the Orange will reconvene in Ithaca at the Cornell Upstate Challenge on Saturday, Jan. 24.
