DURHAM, N.H. – The Syracuse women's ice hockey defense held No. 3 New Hampshire to two scoreless periods in its 2-1 loss to the Wildcats on Saturday evening. Junior Stefanie Marty scored the lone Syracuse goal against the team she played with prior to joining the inaugural Orange team. The game was SU's third against a ranked opponent this season.
After a scoreless first period, the Orange opened up the scoring within the opening five minutes of the second. Freshman Holly Carrie-Mattimoe and junior co-captain Julie Rising dished out the assist to Marty. It was Marty's first goal of the season.
Despite UNH outshooting SU 35-21, goaltender Lucy Schoedel had 33 saves and held off her previous college from scoring until midway through the third period. Senior Micaela Long scored the first for the Wildcats, and senior Kelly Paton added the second eight minutes later to settle the final score, 2-1.
The Orange travels next weekend for another pair of games against Hockey East opponents. It will face Connecticut on Friday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m., followed by a 4 p.m. contest at Providence on Saturday, Oct. 17.
