SYRACUSE, NY -- The much-anticipated Carmelo K. Anthony Basketball Center will be fully operational when Syracuse University holds an official dedication ceremony on Saturday, Oct. 3, starting at 9 a.m. The $19 million, state-of-the-art basketball practice facility will house the men's and women's basketball programs.
Director of athletics Dr. Daryl Gross, men's coach Jim Boeheim, women's coach Quentin Hillsman and student-athletes Wes Johnson and Nicole Michael are part of the dedication program that will be conducted on the plaza outside the Anthony Center. George Hicker, a former SU standout in basketball, is one of the prominent donors who will speak at the event.
In addition to George and Kathy Hicker, and the Carmelo Anthony Foundation, other prominent donors to the facility who will be recognized include John H. Chapple, John R. Chapple, Joyce Hergenhan, the David M. Kleinhandler Family, Dan and Kathleen Mezzalingua, Howie and Louise Phanstiel, and James H.F. Pulaski.
The project was designed by Skimore, Owings & Merrill LLP and implemented by King & King Architects, LLP, and construction manager Haynor Hoyt Corporation.
Anthony, a 2003 All-American who led the Orange to the NCAA Championship that season, helped kick off the project with a lead gift. He was on hand Sept. 24 for a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the facility before leaving for training camp with the Denver Nuggets.
The Anthony Center is 54,000 square feet and includes two NCAA regulation-size basketball courts, a strength and conditioning room, an athletic training suite, offices for both coaching staffs and complete locker-room facilities.
Saturday will mark the first public look at an expansive Hall of Fame wing that is complete with images and artifacts representing the rich history of college basketball at Syracuse University.
Saturday's dedication is an invitation-only event for donors to the facility and Syracuse administrators.
