SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Senior middle blocker Sarah Morton logged 13 kills and fired off a trio of service aces to power the Syracuse (18-7) offense, but it was not enough to stave off a strong Wisconsin-Green Bay (8-16) team as the Orange dropped a 3-1 decision on Sunday afternoon at the Kress Center.
“We came out strong, ready and focused in the first set,” assistant coach Carol LaMarche said. “Wisconsin-Green Bay made some adjustments in the second set and picked up their defense which made it harder for us to get kills and frustrated our hitters.”
Junior Hayley Todd followed in Morton's footsteps, putting down 12 kills from the outside while adding a pair of service aces. Sophomore outside hitter Erin Little added 10 kills while junior Mindy Stanislovaitis chipped in six. Rookie setter Laura Homann added a pair of kills while powering the SU attack with 41 helpers.
Defensively, outside hitter Noemie Lefebvre filled in at libero, collecting a match-high 19 digs while senior outside hitter Kacie MacTavish ranked second with 13 back row pickups. Morton was the defensive leader at the net, maintaining her billing as the nation's best blocker with six total rejections, including three solo while Todd and freshman Samantha Hinz added three each.
The Orange jumped out to an early lead on the Phoenix, taking the first set, 25-16, but could not counter Green Bay's second-set adjustments, dropping the next three sets, 25-18, 25-21 and 25-20.
Syracuse returns to conference action on Friday, October 30 when it visits Louisville at 7 p.m. before heading to Cincinnati for a 2 p.m. match on Sunday, November 1.
