LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Senior running back Delone Carter rushed for 129 yards on 28 carries and one touchdown for the fifth 100-yard game of his career in a 10-9 loss at Louisville on Saturday, November 14. Carter moved up to the 22nd spot on SU's all-time rushing yards record list with 1,702. Sophomore defensive end Chandler Jones posted a personal-best 10 tackles, including a career-high 2.5 tackles for loss and one sack, while junior linebacker Doug Hogue registered eight tackles and a career-best two sacks.The Syracuse defense allowed just 151 yards of total offense against the Cardinals, which is the lowest total for an Orange opponent this season.
The Syracuse defense stopped Louisville on its first five possessions. On the Cardinals first series, junior linebacker Doug Hogue sacked junior quarterback Adam Froman, forcing Louisville to punt the ball. Freshman safety Phillip Thomas recorded his first career interception on the Cardinals first possession of the second quarter.
The Orange scored first on a 42-yard field goal by freshman Ryan Lichtenstein.
During the 13-play, 61-yard drive included four completions by quarterback Greg Paulus, including two for 28 yards to sophomore running back Antwon Bailey and an 18-yard pass to freshman wide receiver Alec Lemon.
Louisville tied the game at three on its next possession, going 43 yards in less than five minutes to set up a 31-yard field goal with 3:54 remaining in the third quarter.
The Orange regained the lead, 9-3, on its first possession of the fourth quarter, when Carter scored his ninth rushing touchdown of the season with less than 13 minutes remaining.
The Cardinals scored the game's final points on a 15-yard touchdown pass to Josh Chichester with 1:24 left in the game for a 10-9 lead.
Orange kick returner Mike Jones returned the ensuing kickoff 40 yards to give the offense the ball on its own 46-yard line. After Paulus gained 11 yards on a run up the middle, the quarterback tried to connect with sophomore Marcus Sales on a second and 10 play, but the pass went off of Sales' hands and Louisville's Andrew Robinson made an interception at the Louisville 32-yard line to stop SU's drive.
Syracuse will host Rutgers on Saturday, November 21 (3:30 p.m., ESPN360.com) on Senior Day. Eighteen seniors will be honored, including 14 student-athletes and four managers.
