
Orange Hosts Rutgers on Senior Day

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse will honor the careers of 19 seniors at the final home game of the season when the Orange hosts No. 25 Rutgers today at the Carrier Dome (3:30 p.m., ESPN360.com). Tickets are available online and at the Carrier Dome Box Office (888-DOME-TIX).
Fifteen student-athletes and four team managers, who are scheduled to earn their degree by May, 2010, will be honored prior to the game on 2009 Senior Day. The group of student-athletes includes, Ryan Bartholomew, Tucker Baumbach, Cam Dantley, Arthur Jones, Max Leo, Lavar Lobdell, Jim McKenzie, Mike Owen, Greg Paulus, Dalton Phillips, Andrew Robinson, Nico Scott, Derrell Smith and Mike Stenclik. The four student managers are head manager Mike Kravec, Joe Meyer, Jeremiah Standifer and Edwin Dei.
Prior to kickoff, the Football Family Fun Zone will open on the Quad at 12:30 p.m. The SU Marching Band, cheerleaders, dance team and Otto will perform. There will also be jumpies for the kids, face painting by the SU Dance Team and the pre-game radio broadcast. Fans are urged to get to their seat early, as one lucky fan will be chosen to win $444 twenty minutes before kickoff. During halftime of the football game, the Syracuse University and Rutgers University marching bands will perform.
Syracuse holds a 28-10-1 lead against the Scarlet Knights in a series dating back to 1914. The Orange has a 12-6 record since BIG EAST play began in 1991, and holds a 10-5 advantage in the Dome.
Carter Eyes Top 20
Senior running back Delone Carter had his third 100-yard rushing game of the season and the fifth of his career at Louisville (129 yards on 28 carries), moving into the 22nd spot on SU's career rushing yards record list. Carter has 1,702 yards in 27 games and has earned three BIG EAST weekly honors for his performances at Pittsburgh, against Maine and against Akron. He ranks 44th in the nation and fourth in the league in rushing average (84.2 yards per game).
Injury Toll Reaches 10
Syracuse has lost 10 players, including six starters, to season-ending injuries in 2009. The most recent losses are starting middle linebacker Derrell Smith, who injured his knee against Akron and played through the Louisville game with the injury. Sophomore running back/kick returner Mike Jones and long snapper/tight end Dalton Phillips will also miss the remainder of the season due to injuries suffered in the game at Louisville. The group of starters includes tight ends Nick Provo and Cody Catalina, defensive end Jared Kimmel, strong safety Max Suter, nose tackle Arthur Jones and offensive tackle Jonathan Meldrum. Starting center Jim McKenzie missed three games due to injury, but returned to start at Pitt and at Louisville. Cornerback Dorian Graham suffered an injury during pre-season practice, which sidelined him for the season.
Hogue Impresses at Linebacker
In only his first season at linebacker, junior Doug Hogue ranks eighth among BIG EAST defenders with 0.60 sacks per game is tied for eighth in the league with 1.00 tackles for loss per game. He is fourth on the Orange defense with 59 tackles, including 37 solo, 9.5 for a loss of yards and six sacks. He has recorded one interception, one fumble recovery and five quarterback hurries. At Louisville, he had eight tackles, including seven solo, and a pair of sacks.
Scouting the Scarlet Knights
Rutgers is 7-2 overall and 2-2 in the BIG EAST this season after its 31-0 win against South Florida last weekend. Tom Savage had completed 109-of-198 yards for 1,535 yards and 10 touchdowns this season. He has connected with Tim Brown on 40 passes for 860 yards. Joe Martinek leads the team in rushing with 729 yards on 146 carries and eight touchdowns.
